BATTIR’S TERRASSES

Overview of Battir’s Terrasses: Beit Jala to Battir (Southwest of Jerusalem)

Hike from the enclaved village of Battir south of Jerusalem. In June 2014, the site was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List as well as the World Heritage in Danger List. Once connected to Jerusalem through the railroad, the gardens built in irrigated terraces for market gardening used to constitute a breadbasket for Jerusalem. The itinerary takes us through craggy hills and farmed terraces, providing the opportunity to discover a traditional system for the fair distribution of water among farmer families and to explore some of the region’s typically Mediterranean landscapes.

Walking duration: around 3 hours (6 km, easy)
